Widow Found Guilty Of Manslaughter

Mekiko Black was found guilty yesterday of manslaughter for the 2010 shooting death of her husband.

The 25-year-old sat motionless, but with tears in her eyes, as the verdict from the 11-woman, one-man jury was read, after two hours of deliberation.

Throughout the entire trial, Black maintained that she shot her husband, 27-year-old defense force officer Leonardo Black in self-defense because he continuously beat her.

However, the jury found her not guilty of murder 12-0 and guilty of manslaughter by means of provocation 11-1.

As she was escorted out the courtroom, she hugged her mother and cried as her family sobbed helplessly.

Outside the courtroom, the victim’s mother, Maeronie Black said while she knows she cannot bring her son back, justice was served.

“Sometimes in that court I think they were talking about a different person,” she said.

“But at the end of the day, there’s a God above and whatever you do in life, you have to pay for it. That’s all I have to say.”

Lead Prosecutor Anthony Delaney said he was satisfied with the verdict.

“I’m always satisfied with the jury’s verdict,” he said.

“They’ve spoken. They’ve found her not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter and the evidence in the case as far as I’m concerned bares that out.”

Mikiko will be remanded at Her Majesty’s Prison until sentencing, which is set to take place on October 4th.

She was also visited regularly by a representative from the Department of Rehabilitative Services by way of a probationary request.

Justice Vera Watkins presided over the case.
