School Security Officer Shot

The Ministry of Education confirmed that there was a shooting at LW Young Junior High School yesterday.

Director of Education Lionel Sands said in a statement that the security officer was shot to the upper body and thigh around 12:30 p.m.

Sands said the assailant was not on the school’s Bernard Road campus however, shots were fired from outside the school gate, striking the officer.

“As a result of the school being secured, the assailants did not have access to the campus and we commend the work of the officers for properly securing the campus, preventing further casualties,” Sands explained.

Police added that the male security officer was on duty when a white Honda vehicle pulled up to the entrance gate of the school.

A male armed with a handgun, clad in a school uniform exited the vehicle and walked up to the security booth, where he fired several shots at the security officer hitting him to the thigh and chest before speeding off in the vehicle, police explained.

The security officer was rushed to hospital via a private vehicle where he remains in critical condition.

Following the shooting, the school was quickly placed on lock-down as senior education officials and police began the preliminary investigations.

No students were harmed in the incident and the Ministry of Education wishes to remind parents, students and the community that student safety is always a top priority.

Police are actively investigating this incident and are appealing to anyone with information regarding any crime, no matter how small or insignificant (the tip) may seem, to anonymously call police at 919 or crime stoppers at 328-tips (8477).
