Lifeguards On Strike–Students Denied Access To Pool

An ongoing strike by lifeguards has caused a host of students to be unable to access the South Beach pools.

Ms. Kemp, a concerned parent said that because the lifeguards are not in place the children are unable to use the facilties.

“We were here with 22 of our students for swim class and we were denied access to the pool, apparently the lifeguards that are on duty and are required to be there are not there, so we are unable to access the pool,” she said.

She added that this has frustrated both parents and students for the last five weeks and she insists something needs to be done.

“For the last five weeks we’ve not been able to get in with no lifeguard on duty, the pools also are very dirty and haven’t been maintained properly.

“The students and parents are frustrated and upset, I have 22 children sitting in the hot sun right now, still waiting to get this matter resolved because the children are ready to swim.

“According to them they’re waiting on the government to respond which has nothing to do with my children, they’re out in the hot with no pool,” Ms. Kemp said.

Several of the lifeguards refused to be interviewed on record but eluded to unsuitable working conditions, inclusive of no lifeguard booths in the area and pools and bathrooms not being properly maintained as a reason for their strike.

Ministry representatives were unable to be reached at the time of publication
