The Deputy Director of Education for Grand Bahama Sandra Edgecombe died yesterday, according to officials at the Ministry of Education.
The ministry made this announcement yesterday as educators across the country mourned the loss of their colleague.
The Minister of Education, Science and Technology Jerome Fitzgerald extends condolences to her husband, Mr. Godfrey Edgecombe, her son Garris, her family and the Grand Bahama District of Education.
Also extending condolences was the Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchombe, who described Mrs. Edgecombe as a preeminent “Blue Jay.”
“She made real the hopes and dreams of thousands,” Mr. Wilchcombe said. “She admonished, encouraged and nurtured young men and young women to become citizens of purpose and commitment.”
He added that her life was dedicated to the education of the nation’s youth and she embodied the ideals of the great educators who believe that education is the passage to true freedom in the journey to a higher quality of life and living.
“Along life’s journey she impacted the lives of thousands in whom she emptied her heart and soul of love and knowledge,” Mr. Wilchcombe said.
He indicated that Mrs. Edgecombe became on iconic fixture of the education landscape in Grand Bahama.
Mrs. Edgecombe entered the public service in 1974. She was transferred to the Grand Bahama District in 1978.
The consummate professional and a career educator, Mrs. Edgecombe ascended from trainee teacher to trained teacher, reaching the pinnacle of her career as Deputy Director of Education with responsibility for Grand Bahama, Bimini and Grand Cay.
