Christian Council Mourns Francis’ Death

The Bahamas Christian Council is mourning the passing of Rev. Dr. Earl Francis, a man members are describing as “a prince of preachers and pastors.”

“Rev. Dr. Earl Francis, was not only an outstanding pastor, but he modelled what it meant to be a good husband and father throughout his life,” Christian Council President Rev. Dr. Ranford Patterson said in a testament.

“It was common place to see him demonstrate his love and affection for his wife Dr. Marjorie Francis whom he referred to as his ‘sweet potato.’ Additionally, Dr. Francis was one of the first black hoteliers Over the Hill. This spoke to him being progressive and visionary as a businessman. His contribution to the Majority Rule movement is also noteworthy. We hail this former Vice President of the Bahamas Christian Council, and we pray for his family, church and the Baptist community on the passing of this giant of the faith. Our country and churches are the better because he passed this way.”

Rev. Dr. Earl “The Pearl” Francis, as he was affectionately called, died shortly before 10:00 p.m. last Wednesday following a long illness.

He was 92-years-old.

Rev. Francis served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Coconut Grove for 50 years. The church was aptly named as it was the first church on the southern side of Market Street.

“First and foremost, on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas I extend sympathy to his family and church members, who he has led with great religious fervour and success,” Prime Minister Perry Christie told reporters last Thursday.

“He will be missed but the good news is he has set a wonderful example that will endure.”

The couple was blessed with 13 children among them cultural icon, Saxons Superstars Leader Percy “Vola” Francis, Dr. Emmanuel Francis and Rev. Diana Francis.
