BPL Investigates Blackout

Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) says it is investigating an island wide power outage that occurred late Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning.

BPL Corporate Communications Manager Arnette Ingraham told The Bahama Journal that the entire system shut down before 5:00 a.m.

Power was reportedly restored to all BPL customers before 9:00 a.m.

“Within 30 minutes of total system shutdown, the company had restarted engines and commenced supply restoration to its impacted customers,” she said.

“By 7:00 a.m. more than 50 percent of BPL’s customers had their service restored and before 9:00 a.m. there was 100 percent restoration.”

One customer said her electricity had gone off at least five times Wednesday evening.

Now BPL says it is also investigating another matter.

“A partial shutdown on Wednesday resulted in a loss of power to 50 percent of BPL’s customers,” it said.

“In both instances, crews were able to quickly restart engines and restore power to impacted customers.”

In the meantime, BPL says it apologizes for the inconvenience, adding that significant improvements will be made in both long and short term.
