Despite bold headlines announcing that he would step down from his post, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works Renward Wells has still not tendered his resignation nor has he been fired.
Mr. Wells has come under fire since it was revealed that he signed a letter of intent to commit the government to a $650 million contract with Stellar Waste to Energy Limited without authorisation from Cabinet.
Earlier this week Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis renewed his calls for Mr. Wells’ resignation noting that he had breached the protocols of the Westminster Parliamentary System.
However, Mr. Wells who has not publicly addressed the issue offered a terse response to the Opposition leader yesterday.
“The Free National Movement (FNM) doesn’t determine my political future that will be done by the people of Bamboo Town” he said.
Mr. Wells refused to comment on whether he will resign or has been asked to do so.
Last week, it was reported that Prime Minister Perry Christie had asked Mr. Wells to resign, however, the Bamboo Town MP remains in his post.
Dr. Minnis has said the prime minister’s inaction and lack of transparency are proof that the government is trying to cover up what appears to be a ‘shady’ deal.
