PLP Convention Begins Thursday

Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chairman Fred Mitchell yesterday announced the party’s 54th National General Convention set to kick off this coming Thursday until July 27 at Melia Nassau Beach Resort.

This year’s theme is ‘Renewal: A Call to Action’.

Mr. Mitchell made the announcement during a press conference at the PLP headquarters where he indicated that in the coming month, PLPs will be asked to approve a 10-year plan, which will include the platform for the party in the next general election.

Deputy Leader Chester Cooper spearheads that committee, which has already begun its preliminary work.

He said, “That plan will include a commitment that each constituency branch will have a fixed headquarters which is owned by the party so that they have a place to meet without depending on public schools.

“Further, the national party ought to commit to the construction of a new national headquarters building and convention center where all of our meetings both private and public can be held.”

On Thursday the convention will open at 8 a.m.

Sessions for registered delegates will be held on Thursday and Friday, conducting party business which includes the consideration of amendments to the party’s constitution, the nomination of officers and panel discussions on various topics.

Evening sessions will also be open to the public at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

Live radio and television coverage will begin at 8 p.m. each night.

Convention Committee Chairman Michael Halkitis said, “During the evening sessions, we have an exciting lineup of speakers who will discuss issues confronting the nation and advanced solutions and policy proposals.

“We expect to welcome delegates from across the country to participate in the convention, share insight, ideas, experiences, and to receive the message from the party’s leadership.”

At each National General Convention, all elected party positions become vacant.

Chairman Fred Mitchell, however, urged party delegates to re-elect Philip Davis’ team.
