National Women’s Week is coming to an end and although a lot of progress has been made,
Minister of Labour and Public Service Pia Glover-Rolle said there is still work to be done.
Mrs. Glover-Rolle discussed how woman’s difficulties are often overlooked.
“As we look ahead and think about the ways that we can truly accelerate equity, equality, and
empowerment, of women and girls, we must pick up where the late great Obediah Hercules
Wilchcombe left off. We can’t allow the conversation of marital rape and protection of women
and girls to fall by the wayside. We now carry the mantle. We bare the weight of driving the
change that will create a better world for everyone,” Mrs. Glover-Rolle said.
She also addressed the government’s intention to dissolve abuse in the workplace. That is why
National Women’s Week is so important as a platform for discussion, advocacy and progress.
The government’s intention to ratify ILA Convention No.190 aids to end all forms of violence
and harassment in the workplace.
The minister also highlighted the government’s steps to protect women and children.
“We are going to speak to these things that exist and not be ashamed or afraid. As woman
sometimes we are afraid to speak up, but as I stand as the Minister of Labour and Public Service,
I want to make sure that we speak to promotions in the workplace being earned and not given in
some form of a favor. The ILA Convention Ratification No.190 is a major step forward to
protect women and it is just one of the examples how we will drive progress with women
through the Ministry of Labour and Public Service,” she said.
Mrs. Glover-Rolle added that she will continue to be an example of a leader and advocate for
women.
“As a woman in leadership, I am keenly aware of the needs to speak to the issues facing women
and girls, while conducting myself as a leader in a way that makes women proud.”
Although this is the end of National Women’s Week, the minister and other advocates will
continue to fight for women’s rights.
