Columbians Sentenced To Four Years

Three Columbian women, who were arraigned last month on drug charges, were sentenced to four years in prison in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Maria Esther Rojas Sosa, Leydi Valencia Londoro and Yamile Andrea Nino were sentenced after being convicted of possession of dangerous drugs with the intent to supply after allegedly being found with the drugs inside their bodies on March 6, 2013.

However, the charges were dropped against Johan Sebastian Flores, Stevenson Osorio, Yeison Mosquera and Johan Martinez.

The women, along with the four men, were busted at the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) for possessing liquid cocaine.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethel told the women however, who cried uncontrollably after she handed down the sentence, that they had the right to appeal her sentence.

She told them they could appeal on the grounds that this is not their home country, the amount of drugs found and due to their impoverished circumstances.

The magistrate also ordered that the four Columbian men be deported immediately.

They were handed over to immigration authorities.

Police initially reported that the group was busted at LPIA after exiting an inbound commercial flight from Panama City and noted that that is when they allegedly found the liquid cocaine inside the suspects’ bodies.

Court dockets indicated that Johan Martinez had 10.5 ounces inside him, Maria Sosa had another three-and-a-half ounces in her, Yamile Nino had five-and-a-half ounces and Leydi Londoro had six ounces.

Terrell Butler represented the defendants.
