Hospitality majors from the College of The Bahamas’ Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute recently toured Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) to find out what it takes to run the country’s major gateway.

From an extensive look at the bag-weight imaging system (BWIS) to behind the scenes communications rooms, students saw firsthand how passenger luggage moves through the airport and how information is fed through Nassau Airport Development’s (NAD) Operations Center.
The tour, arranged by COB lecturer Brendan Foulkes, helped future hospitality professionals make the connection between the airport’s technical areas and how important critical systems are to the overall visitor experience.

Kevin McDonald, Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering at NAD and a COB Alumnus, had a chance to chat with the group prior to the tour. Describing NAD as a young and energetic company, he encouraged the students to take advantage of this opportunity to see the career possibilities that exist at LPIA. “We play a major role in the experience of tourists coming to our country and the career opportunities at LPIA are directly linked to the overall tourism product.”

NAD’s President and CEO, Vernice Walkine, thanked the COB students for visiting the facilities. “It was truly our pleasure to host the group. The entire team here at NAD is committed to ensuring that these facilities remain in world-class condition for a long time. We always enjoy the opportunity to show Bahamians and residents of The Bahamas what we have built for their benefit, and trust that it gives them a sense of pride.”
