BNT Addresses Egg Island Concerns

In the wake of concern among Bahamians regarding a proposed development by Disney Cruise Lines on Egg Island, off the Northern Coast of Eleuthera, The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) yesterday said it shares the concern and is looking into the matter.

It has been reported that Disney Cruise Lines intends to develop the island, while the speculation is that the company has plans to build a cruise ship port.

Meantime, BNT said it has not been made aware of any “approvals in principle with regard to the rumoured Egg Island development”. “After several inquiries from BNT members and other concerned citizens, a letter was sent on July 7 to the director of the Investment Authority – and copied to the director of the BEST Commission,” BNT said. “The letter requested information on any potential developments planned for Egg Island. There has been no response so far, but the BNT will continue to follow up in accordance with our statutory mandate,” the organization continued.

Many residents on the island have expressed opposition to the potential development.

A petition was composed by over 1,000 individuals in protest of the development.

Petitioners have argued that if the speculated development goes through, it would have adverse affects on the environment.

They contend that pollution from a cruise ship amounts to the same emissions as 17,000 cars simultaneously.

The group further stated that the waste generated by the thousands of cruise ship passengers visiting the island will be a massive volume, while the sewerage produced will be “horrific”.
