CPC Launches Logo Competition

In an effort to increase the public’s awareness of their rights as a consumer in the country, the
Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), in partnership with the Ministry of Education,
Technical and Vocational Training, launched a logo competition for students ages 12 and up.
The competition is preparation for the revitalization of CPC’s logo.
CPC Executive Director Sharmie Farrington said the commission is seeking to engage students
across The Bahamas, so it was best to partner with the Ministry of Education for the logo
competition.
“As you can see from the poster behind you, our creative mind logo competition, we really want
to be, as we would say, a blessing to young students,” Ms. Farrington said.
“We want to encourage them to be creative in designing a new logo for the Consumer Protection
Commission.”
Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin extended her gratitude for the partnership with the
CPC for children to compete artistically and understand their rights.
“But in the meantime, with what is available to the department and the rights currently that are
actionable, we want to commend the department for the work that they do, she said.
“And we’re appreciative that you have included in the embrace, our young people, so that they
can be activated into this concept that as consumers out there in the marketplace, that there are
certain standards or rights that exist that they are able to vitiate in throughout your department or
elsewhere.
“So, I think this is a very important intervention and represents a sort of deepening of, I guess,
the civilization of our nation in terms of the fact that someone who goes in a store and spends
money or buys a car or whatever it is, that they’re able to get redress and not find themselves at a
loss in the deep blue sea.”
Ms. Farrington explained the details of this competition.
“So, we are requiring them to do some research on the Consumer Protection Act, so that they, in
turn, will be educated about what it is that we do,” she said.
“Our first price winner will receive $500 and prizes. Our second price place will get $250 also in
prizes, and third place will get $100 and prizes.

“Why is this necessary? This is very necessary because we know that the mandate of the
government is to give the consumer a louder voice and to do that, we must be engaged in
educating our public.
“So, we want to first start at the high school level, and I’m told now 12-year-olds are now in
primary school. A few of them are in, so we want to make it clear that they are not excluded
from this competition.
“So, we want the Ministry of Education to assist us, kindly assist us, in getting the word out to all
of the schools in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and also any young people who wish to
engage in this competition.”
The competition will take place until September 20, 2023 and all submissions can be dropped off
at the Consumer Protection building on Tonique Williams-Darling Highway.
