Senior Deputy Director of Social Services Lillian Quant-Forbes called on the wealthy in the country to do more to contribute to families in need.

 Mrs. Quant-Forbes’ comments came as she brought remarks at the official opening ceremony of the Bain and Grants Town community’s new and expanded Social Ministry Office of Mt. Olive Baptist Church this week.

 “This is about you doing what you can for the next person who doesn’t have it. And I can tell you, if we just do that, all will be well. There are billionaires right here. So why can’t we tap into them, and they can contribute and help us to help our own, who are genuinely in need of assistance,” she said.

 Bain and Grants Town is an area typically plagued by numerous social ills, and it is against this backdrop that Pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church and Director of Hands Across Bain Grants Town, Rev. C. B. Moss, collaborated with The Department of Social Services to create and now expand the Social Ministry Centre in that community.

 “That should always be the main mission. That has always been the mission of Mt. Olive. Never daunted, never took our eyes of that mission, because we need God to overlook plenty things we do,” said Rev. Moss.

 “Let us look out for those who are unable to look out for themselves. That is the essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he added.

 Local entertainer and partner in the initiative, Fred Munnings Jr. while bringing remarks, made a special call to the government.

 “I am calling on the government to declare Bain Town a historic community; because once that happens those people behind the gates and other places who have these tax exemptions can give you grants. Then they can write those grants off against wherever they are from. So if this historic community is declared as such it now becomes eligible for those fancy things. You can go to the IDB and get money for these kinds of programmes,” Mr. Munnings said.

 According to Rev. Moss, the expansion of the office makes way for increased food and clothing distribution, including a brand new thrift shop in which residents in the community can obtain free clothing items.

 Beneficiaries of the community would be privy to such items as footwear, hats, ties, and numerous clothing items for men, women and children

 Meantime, Rev. Moss said the resources are also open to individuals outside the Bain and Grants Town community.
