Roberts: “I have my information and sources” on referendum

After many have wondered as to how Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party Bradley Roberts knew the referendum had been voted against, Mr. Roberts says he simply had his own sources.

Tuesday, on Referendum night, Mr. Roberts sent out a press release thanking the Bahamian public for its show of democracy and acknowledging that the referendum had failed after Bahamians voted no straight across the board.

“I have my information and my sources. We have our agents in all of the polling stations,” he said.

“Don’t the news network in the United States make a call of the elections right after the polls close and right before they close?”

“I don’t understand what the big concern is about this.”

Mr. Roberts’ press release came around 10:00 p.m. before most of the votes were in from the various polling stations.

On Thursday Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage took up for Mr. Roberts in the House of Assembly stating that he had not conceded.

“Who says he conceded, he never said that,” he said.

“He didn’t have all of the results. There was no concession. He just recognized the fact that the yes vote had failed.”

On Thursday North Eleuthera MP Theo Neilly said that it is very “discouraging and shameful” that two days later, all of the results had not been released from the referendum.

As the media awaited results on Tuesday night, Parliamentary registration was in complete chaos as various media outlets ran back and forth to release results to the public ahead of each other.

At many points in the night, only one media outlet had access to results as the the other media houses assumed results would be given to them once Parliamentary Commissioner Sherlyn hall had signed off on them.

Around 10:00 about only six constituencies in New Providence had released full results.

Around 11:00 p.m. Mr. Hall announced on national television that from his analysis of the results handed in so far, Bahamians had voted no to all bills resoundingly.
