Murder Victims on Bail Concerns Dames

Two of the country’s latest murder victims wore ankle bracelets, one of them also on bail for murder and according Minister of National Security Marvin Dames, something will be done.

Yesterday outside Cabinet, Mr. Dames told reporters measures can be put in place to lessen the amount of victims as well as prolific offenders involved in heinous crimes who are currently on bail.

“Persons have a right to bail. That is something we will continue to live with. There are some things that we have to do. We have to improve the efficiency of justice and maybe that will mitigate against all of these person going out on bail,” he said.

“Very shortly we will be moving bills through parliament, but until that comes around, there are things we must do in the short term and we have technology. We have technology that points to where these incidents are occurring and so we’ve been working with the police to say use that technology to import your strategy and recently they’ve been doing just that. They’re seeing improvements in certain areas.”

He added that figures consistently show that illicit firearms remain the weapon of choice in the majority of killings.

He said there is a plan to address this as well.

“The focus now will have to be more on how do we take the large amount of weapons that have been allowed to accumulate on our streets and in the hands of primarily young people. How do we get a hold of them? How do we stop the trafficking of firearms coming into this country?” he said.

“There are some things that we can do in the short term, but that’ s more long term approach where we have to introduce the legislation for the enactment of a new national intelligence unit. That will focus on these threats that are coming from the outside.”

The short term improvement he said is the improving capacity and capability within the respective law enforcement agencies.

At last count, the country’s murder count neared 80.
