A Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) employee became the country’s latest murder victim after being gunned down early yesterday morning.
The victim, who sources identify as Jamal Huyler, an employee of eight years at BTC’s Fleet Management Division, was ordering food at a breakfast stand – something that was part of his daily routine.
According to Superintendent of Police B.K. Bonamy Jr., that’s when Huyler was approached by two men who fired shots at him before fleeing in a green SUV.
Bahamas Communications and Public Officers Union (BCPOU) President Bernard Evans described Huyler as a likeable person and said his death was “tragic and senseless.”
“This is just senseless and I think this country needs a wakeup call,” he said.
“It’s just a sad, sad, sad day.”
Kandi Gibson, president of Families of All Murdered Victims (F.O.A.M.) was also at the scene.
She made a call for Bahamians to band together in an effort to curb the occurrence of frequent killings.
“Enough is enough,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what colour shirt your wear – green, yellow or red. At the end of the day, the only people that feel it are the families left behind. You may think it ends there, but guess what…he has a nation inside him. So when you kill him, what do you stop? You stop his nation. You stop whatever he had to give back to society.”
This latest killing marks the country’s 92nd murder for the year.
Just four days prior, a 34-year-old father of two was found with dead with gunshot wounds in the East Street and Cordeaux Avenue area.
Police are asking for persons with information to contact the Central Detective Unit (CDU) or the nearest police station.
