Security officials at the upscale private residential Sandyport community are denying media reports that claimed a serial rapist had targeted and struck that community.
Director of Security at Sandyport Sarah Barton said that it has been reported that Sandyport was one of the western New Providence communities where cases of rape have been reported.
She said that these reports have left residents and homeowners on edge and her office has been inundated with calls from residents concerned about the safety of the community.
Ms. Barton insisted that there have been no reports of any major criminal activity in Sandyport for years and she called the reports “bogus.”
“This story has really made people worry,” she said. “We do business with people from all over the world and we have been getting calls from residents – here at home as well as those abroad who have read the story and as a result are concerned that there are these types of incidents happening here.
“We have received no reports of any rapes, assaults or attacks. This is a safe and crime-free community…occasionally we may receive a report of a bicycle being missing but even that is very rare.”
The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) recently revealed that in the last six months a number of women were raped during home invasions in the western and eastern districts of New Providence.
“From the information we gathered, there are about four cases in the eastern area and another four cases in the western area,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said during a press conference Monday.
“The incidents in the west span over the last six months and the incidents in the east within the last few weeks.”
Two men have since been taken in to custody in connection with these incidents.
Police announced yesterday that they arrested 28-year-old Donovan Sturrup of Union Village and 32-year-old Enoch Eulin of Excellence Estates.
Since news broke of the spike in home invasions and rapes in the eastern and western districts of New Providence, police have come under attack from the public for failing to alert residents in these areas of the disturbing trend.
Ms. Barton said while communities in western New Providence may have been targeted by these perpetrators, she maintained that Sandyport has never had any home invasions or rapes.
“I want our residents to know that our security staff is vigilant and maintaining a safe and calm environment is what we strive to do each day,” she said.
“This has always been and will continue to be a safe and crime free place and we want residents to be assured that they do not have to live in fear.”
