Prime Minister Perry Christie recently confirmed that he is in the process of reviewing the findings of an investigation launched to find out why and how Ministry of Works Parliamentary Secretary Renward Wells was able to sign off on a $650 million Letter of Intent (LOI) without authorisation.
Government officials have long been tight lipped on the issue surrounding the deal to establish a solid waste to energy facility in the company, but on Friday the prime minister said he had planned to review the documents this past weekend and update the public soon.
“I’ve just received the communication from (Deputy Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis) with respect to information I’ve requested and a communication from (Environment Minister) Mr. Kenred Dorsett who is the minister responsible for landfills so as you can appreciate Mr. Wells works in the Ministry of Works but the matter also concerns the Ministry of Environment,” he said.
“So you can expect therefore, that I would probably take a weekend to review and then you’ll hear from me, you’ll hear from me imminently.”
The signed LOI committed the government a $650 million contract with Stellar Waste To Energy Limited to construct a waste-to energy facility at the dump site.
The prime minster had reportedly asked Mr. Wells to resign yet he remained in his post as parliamentary secretary.
The Opposition has repeatedly called for the prime minster to fire Mr. Wells and have publicly slammed the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) for their lack of transparency on the matter.
Opposition leader Dr. Hubert Minnis said that the prime minister’s inaction to fire Mr. Wells shows that the government is trying to cover up what appears to be a “shady” deal.
In response to the brewing controversy, last month, Mr. Wells refused to comment on whether he would resign but he did say this much.
“The Free National Movement (FNM) doesn’t determine my political future that will be done by the people of Bamboo Town,” Mr. Wells said.
