An early morning shootout ended yesterday with police killing two young men and arresting two others.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said officers were on a special operation in eastern New Providence around 2:15 a.m. Thursday when they spotted a small dark coloured vehicle in the Highbury Park area.

“Officers pursued the vehicle that made several maneuvers through various corners. The vehicle then traveled east along St. Michael’s Road. Upon reaching the juncture of St. Michael’s and Prince Charles Drive, a passenger came out, brandishing a handgun, pointing it in the direction of the officers” ACP Ferguson said.

“The officers, in turn, opened fire on the suspect. He was fatally shot.”

ACP Ferguson added that when officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver tried to run them over.

The officers responded by opening fire, killing the driver.

The Journal understands that the suspects are teenagers.

Two other suspects were arrested and a handgun was recovered, according to police.

Among those on the early morning crime scene was Coroner Linda Virgil, the primary investigator in the case of the fatal police related shooting.

“She will determine if the shooting was justifiable,” ACP Ferguson explained.
