Aside from the fact that Free National Movement (FNM) Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis was thrown out the House of Assembly for speaking when he was told not to, FNM supporters are upset of the way their parliamentarians were roughed up by police officers trying to get them out the house.
On Wednesday, the Killarney MP was named and removed from the house after he refused to remain silent, an order placed on him by the speaker last month for not withdrawing statements about Prime Minister Perry Christie being ‘cahoots’ with Canadian Fashion Designer Peter Nygard.
This sparked an uproar as several police officers were seen grabbing MPs Neko Grant, Richard Lightbourne and even throwing North Eleuthera MP Theo Neilly to the ground.
That same night it was like election time all over again as FNM Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis told hundreds of party supporters that their voice in parliament will not be silenced by the powers of the government.
Addressing the crowd, Dr. Minnis said he was disappointed in the police officers who had the audacity to come for him in Parliament when there is so much crime going on in the capital.
“I was surprised, with all the crime, rape and robbery going on in this country, they had almost half the police force to arrest me,” he said.
“I wasn’t committing a crime. I wasn’t trying to steal anything. The only thing I was trying to do was defend democracy and take this country back.”
St. Anne’s MP and FNM Shadow Minister for National Security said he found it interesting that there were so many high ranking police officers there that he had not seen in quite a while.
“It was the most senior officers I’ve seen in a while,” he said. “When you look at the crime in this country and what’s going on, here it is you have the most senior officers stationed at the House of Assembly and most of them were in khaki.”
“I sat and looked said they can’t blame Tommy for this one.”
FNM Deputy Leader Loretta Butler-Turner slammed Golden Gates MP Shane Gibson, who claims he’s seen pictures of her at Nygard’s Cay as well.
“I will deal with Shane Gibson when I return to the house,” she said.
“I will have the speaker know that I am going in there to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
“The truth of the matter is, I don’t know a Nygard. I was invited to a funeral for his mother. But I never put foot in a place called Nygard’s Cay.”
FNM Chairman Darron Cash said all the speaker did by naming Dr. Minnis and having him removed from parliament is awaken a sleeping giant.
The party said they have started their campaign to the next election, despite being four years away.
