Ahead of its convention next month during a local talk show this past Sunday it was revealed that there may be teams going into the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP) October National Convention to vie for the top three leadership positions.
Those teams were said to be current Interim Party Leader Phillip Davis vying to reclaim the positions as leader alongside Exuma and Ragged Island Member of Parliament(MP) Chester Cooper to assume the Deputy Leader positon and for Fort Charlotte MP Alfred Sears to assume the position as Chairman.
Their opponents were said to be current Englerston MP Glenys Hanna Martin who has already announced her bid to obtain the leadership position alongside former Tourism Minister Obie Winchcombe for Deputy Leader and South Andros MP Picewell Forbes as Chairman.
The Bahama Journal caught up with two of the individuals named to solidify the claims and both men said the claims were false.
“I’m consulting with various person, stalwart counselors and delegates to assess the level of support and I remain interested in the leadership of the party,” said Mr. Sears.
“But I have not decided at this point what I will do.”
As for Mr. Forbes he had this to say.
“There’s no such truth to those such things,” said Mr. Forbes.
“I will be making a statement.”
The MP said he was on his way to his constituency to assess hurricane damages when The Journal caught up with him.
The PLP held its last convention on January 24-26. At the close of the three-day event, former Prime Minister Perry Christie won with 1,264 votes to 169 for Alfred Sears in a leadership race.
As a result of the May 10 landslide defeat at the hands of the FNM, Mr. Christie resigned as leader of the PLP days later.
Mr. Davis, former PLP deputy leader, was immediately elevated to interim party leader, as mandated in the PLP’s constitution.
The convention will take place on October 22nd through October 25th at The Melia Nassau Beach Hotel.
