Rollins Defends Position In FNM

Member of Parliament for Fort Charlotte Dr. Andre Rollins is defending his position as it relates to the ongoing rift within the Free National Movement (FNM).

Dr. Rollins’ comments were made this past weekend on one of social media platforms.

He said if Dr. Minnis has what it takes to become prime minister then he will prove himself to be the most fit leader.

“If Dr. Hubert Minnis has what it takes to be prime minister, then he will weather this storm and prove himself the most fit to lead,” he said.

“I want to have a say in who I want to be prime minister – understanding the immense power reposed in that office – and influence the direction of our nation, then I will do just that. It won’t be the PLP pushing Perry Christie on Bahamians and it won’t be the FNM denying Bahamians their right to have a say in the political process.”

Recently, there have been reports that an attempt has been made to have Dr. Minnis replaced as leader of the opposition.

The MPs have given, according to sources, an ultimatum demanding that Dr. Minnis call for a party convention to take place within the next 30 days or they will move to elect a new opposition leader.

According to sources there are six MPs out of the 10 have proposed this ultimatum; these MPs include Dr. Rollins Long Island MP Loretta Butler-Turner, St. Anne’s Mp Hubert Chipman, Central Grand Bahama MP Neko Grant, Montagu MP Richard Lightbourn and North Eleuthera MP Theo Neilly.

According to the source, the MPs will take a no confidence vote if Dr. Minnis fails to set the convention.

“What ails our nation is that we are a people who lack courage. We are afraid to take risks and do what we feel is right and necessary,” he said.

“We prefer to do what is convenient to our personal and financial well being and say to hell with everyone else, as long as I get ‘mines’.”

Dr. Rollins went on to say Dr. Minnis if willing to prove his leadership skills will withstand the backlash.

“If not, then the FNM will put the best man or woman in place to defeat the PLP and in the process deepen democracy in our beloved Bahamaland.”

Dr. Rollins went on to say that conventions are a democracy and leaders should never be afraid to “allow democracy to reign.”

Sources have revealed that Dr. Minnis still has the support of the Deputy leader and MP for East Grand Bahama Peter Turnquest, South Abaco MP Edison Key and Bamboo Town MP Renward Wells.

It has also been revealed that although this group wishes to replace Dr. Minnis, a conclusion as to who will be the next leader has not been agreed upon.

Dr. Rollins wishes to gain the support of the party and has already approached Mr. Wells.

However Mr. Wells has denied his support.

Dr. Rollins said he also opposes Loretta Butler-Turner.

Dr. Rollins joined the FNM late last year after leaving the party in June stating that he no longer felt wanted in the PLP.
