Rhonda Knowles, 25, of Winton Estates appeared before Justice Bernard Turner on Tuesday to change the plea on three counts concerning a series of events that left a man dead and one critically injured six years ago.
Knowles, who was arraigned before Justice Turner last Friday, pleaded guilty to murder, attempted murder and the conspiracy to commit armed robbery on September 20, 2009.
However, she returned to court yesterday to change the plea after she told the court, that she ‘did not know what she was thinking’ and was ‘not in her right mind’ when the plea was entered.
According to police reports back in September 2009, Knowles and her co-accused, Marvin Colby and Genae McKenzie were driving around the island of New Providence with the intent to commit an armed robbery.
The accused, upon arriving in the Wellington Street area, allegedly shot and killed 29-year-old Bahamas Air pilot Lionel McQueen in his home and critically injured McQueen’s roommate and cousin Montez Saunders.
In court, Knowles told Justice Turner that she was no longer able to afford an attorney and asked the court to provide one for her.
Justice Turner said he would enter a not guilty plea for all three counts until Knowles meets with her new attorney in the near future.
Justice Turner, who suspended Knowles’ bail earlier this year lifted the suspension and released her from police custody.
Knowles will return to court next Friday at 10 a.m. and appear before Justice Roy Jones for a fixed trial date.
Knowles is expected to sign in to the Tarpum Bay Police Station every Monday and Thursday evening when she is in Eleuthera or the South Beach Police Station at the same times when in New Providence.
