Two men were arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with a home invasion that resulted in the murder of 44-year-old Andre Cartwright.
Tiano D’Haiti, 23, of Thompson Lane is accused of murder and burglary while his accomplice, 24-year-old Kevin Andrews of Montell Heights, is charged with accessory after the fact.
The two who appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt were not required to enter pleas to their respective charges.
Following Magistrate Ferguson-Pratt’s remarks, Attorney Glendon Rolle alleged that his client, D’Haiti, was beaten by officers while in custody at The Central Detective Unit.
Nevertheless, D’Haiti was denied bail.
His co-accused, Andrews, also claimed he was treated unfairly by officers when he was denied fresh clothing delivered by his family members.
The prosecution is scheduled to proceed on January 16, 2015 at noon via a voluntary bill of indictment. Deferred due to the question of bail for Andrews, the matter was adjourned to November 20.
As reported by officials, a team of officers from the flying squad acting on intelligence arrived at a home located in Montell Heights where they arrested five adult males in connection with the home invasion and murder that occurred in Blair Estates last month.
According to reports, Cartwright was shot and killed during a home invasion at his residence in Blair Estates on October 28.
The murder occurred after an exchange of fire transpired following Mr. Cartwright’s attempt to protect his elderly parents from the armed invaders who were allegedly posing as police officers.
One of the three assailants was also shot during the crossfire. He was arrested after the incident, detained in the hospital, and is expected to appear in court where he will be formally charged.
