A man who police officials said tried to escape custody and was involved in a shootout with them Monday night was killed during that gun battle.

According to reports, around 9:45 p.m., Monday police received reports
of gun shots being fired in the Bartlette Hill area of Eight Mile Rock.

The shots were being fired from a white Chevy truck, police said.

Officers responded and a short time later intercepted the truck fitting the description.

There was an exchange of gun shots and the driver of the truck reportedly sped off, forcing officers to chase him.

The driver eventually crashed in bushes off the Warren J. Levarity Highway where officers found that the man had been hit during the shootout.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead.

A firearm was also recovered by police at the scene.
