Free National Movement (FNM) Deputy Chairman Dr. Duane Sands on Wednesday questioned whether or not now former Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Urban Development Renward Wells is “taking one for the team,” when the Cabinet Office announced his termination Tuesday evening.
“It took me three or four times to read that Cabinet statement,” he said. “I am not entirely clear exactly what it means. I think it probably means that Mr. Renward Wells was terminated. I don’t know why the prime minister did not say that. I think Bahamians are interested to know whether or not Renward Wells had taking one for the team.”
It was announced late Tuesday, in a brief government statement, that Mr. Wells would be relieved of his position in the ministry.
While no clear cut explanation was given as to why he was being terminated, it is widely speculated that it is in connection to his alleged signing of a $650 million contract with Stellar Waste to Energy company, reportedly without authorisation.
Dr. Sands said this very ugly political fiasco that the country has been subjected to for months now has now gone into a new phase with no real explanation as to the decisions made.
He said the country is so used to imprecise, ambiguous language from the government that it is no secret that, even now, there are still more questions than answers.
He also admitted, though, that there are some suspicions as to how this all unfolded.
“I suspect it is going to open the door for a night golden parachute for Mr. Wells,” he added.
