Netherland Native Fined for Drugs

A Dutch woman can now breathe lightly after escaping jail time when found with drugs at the Sir Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA).

Netherland native Natasha Mital, 37, pleaded guilty to four drug related charges before Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes last week Friday.

Matil was charged with possession of dangerous drugs, conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs, importation of dangerous drugs and conspiracy to import dangerous drugs.

Matil was found at LPIA with 3.6 pounds of ecstasy pills on April 29.

After pleading guilty to all charges, Matil’s lawyer, Jomo Campbell said the Netherland native is extremely remorseful and apologetic to the Bahamian people. He also requested that she be sentenced to anything but a custodial sentence, perhaps community service or a fine.

When Chief Magistrate Forbes asked her if she had family or friends in The Bahamas and if she had planned to stay here, Matil answered that she had plans to leave and go to Jamaica after The Bahamas to her boyfriend.

As Matil wiped tears from her eyes, the chief magistrate noted that she had no previous convictions, however what he considered aggravating was that she had travelled from so far with such a drug in her possession.

Chief Magistrate Forbes imposed a $15,000 fine on Matil or two years in prison.
