Man Claims Self Defense In Yellow Elder Stabbing

The attorney for the man accused of the fatal stabbing of a man last Saturday in Yellow Elder claimed her client acted in self defense during his arraignment Friday.

Laquinton Dean, 29, is accused for the March 29 incident.

It is alleged that he stabbed to death Jermaine Black aka ‘Blacks’ during an altercation along Graham Drive in Yellow Elder.

The men were standing among a group of men when they got into a scuffle which resulted in Black being stabbed.
He died on the scene.

Dean turned himself into police shortly after the incident.

In court Friday, Dean was not required to enter a plea to the murder charge when he appeared before Magistrate Saboula Swain.

His attorney Krysta Mason-Smith told the court that her client should not be charged with murder because he acted in self defense since his life was in danger.

She also informed the court that her client had not received medical treatment for the injuries he sustained during the incident and she expressed concern for both his physical and mental condition noting that he had no previous convictions nor was he familiar with Her Majesty’s Prisons.

Magistrate Swain noted the attorney’s concerns and ordered that Dean be given medical treatment.

The matter was transferred to Court No. 9 for a fixture hearing set for today.
