Dames encourages young men to succeed academically

Top performers of the AF Adderley Junior High have been encouraged to work hard to succeed academically.

Addressing the school’s awards recognition ceremony Friday morning, Minister of National Security Marvin Dames reminded the youngsters that success comes through hard work and perseverance.

“You’re not going to be successful if you’re lazy, this is one impediment to success,” he said.

“Laziness is an impediment to success,” he reiterated.

“You’re not going to be successful if you’re lazy, you’re not going to be successful if you’re disruptive in class, you’re not going to be successful if you fail to do your classwork and your homework, you’re not going to be successful if you feel that you’re the big boy on campus and you don’t have to do your homework, so those are all impediments to success.”

Speaking specifically to the young men, the minister added that success is not gender neutral.

“I say to many of the young men  or all of the young men this morning, who are not sitting here, that you can be here as well, you have to determine your pathway, you have to determine that, you can be here,” he said.

“I remember as a kid every time I failed, I always went and reflect and said what did I do wrong, how can I do better, how can I succeed, and that’s what every one of you ought to be saying today.”

Fifty-one students made the honour roll while six made the principal’s list.
