Body of Haitian Migrant Found In Eleuthera

The body of a Haitian man was discovered in Eleuthera early Saturday morning.

The man was believed to be a part of a group of some 50 Haitian migrants that were seeking to land in South Eleuthera.

According to reports, shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, police received receive a report that several Haitians migrants landed in a sloop off Cape South Eleuthera.

The officers, upon checking the immediate area, found the lifeless body of a male on the shoreline suspected to be part of the group of migrants.

Responding officers arrived on the scene and were able to detain about 50 Haitian nationals.

The migrants have all been handed over to immigration officials.

Investigations are ongoing.This discovery follows the apprehension of 23 suspected Haitian migrants in the Yamacraw area earlier last week.

The apprehension took place on Hanna Road. Officials said the capture was made possible by “private citizens” who notified the department of possible migrant sightings, although they gave the department different locations, ranging from Hanna Road to the Seabreeze area.

In March, over 60 suspected Haitian migrants were apprehended in waters just off the Exuma chain, according to Royal Bahamas Defence Force officials.
