BEC And BTC Customers Experience Service Disruptions

Severe weather during the early morning hours in New Providence Tuesday led to Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) customers again experiencing a disruption to their power supplies.

Many customers were without power supply well into Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement released sometime after mid-day BEC officials said the outages were as a result of a lightning storm that hit New Providence

“Around 5:00 this morning, lightning activity caused the failure of several units at BEC’s Clifton Pier Power Station,” BEC said.

“As a result, supply was lost to several areas on the island.”

Officials said some generators were able to be repaired in mere minutes but as with everything this is a gradual process.

“The corporation also notes that lightning activity also impacted some individual communities, Repair teams are currently working to restore supply to these customers.”
BEC expected full restoration to be completed late Tuesday afternoon.

The country’s telecommunications service provider also released a statement yesterday morning responding to complaints of services being disrupted for hundreds of Bahamians Monday evening.

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) attributes the disruption to a damage undersea cable.

“The link between New Providence and Grand Bahama & Andros left cell phone customers in Grand Bahama, Abaco and Bimini and cell phone & landline customers in Andros without service from around 9pm until about 12:30am,” BTC officials said

“The undersea connection known as B.D.N.S.I. connects New Providence at the family islands in an underwater link.”

BTC said technicians worked quickly to restore services to its customers and the company apologised for any inconveniences caused.
