During his contribution to the 2015/2016 Budget Debate on Monday, Minister of State for Legal Affair Damian Gomez touted the government’s advancement in the administration of justice and made it clear with the latest empirical data that Swift Justice 2.0 is working.
In 2015 alone, Mr. Gomez said Swift Justice is positively impacting specifically, the number of murder cases that are brought before the courts.
“That statistic ought to be a comfort to the public,” he stated.
“Of the 112 applications there were only four successful applications between January and March.”
Over a 12 month period beginning back in 2013, Minister Gomez said there were 976 bail applications and of those 398 persons were admitted to bail.
“Fourteen persons were denied bail and remanded. Seventy persons had their bail conviction varied, five had their bail revoke and there were 359 adjournments of the bail application.”
A year later, the 2014 statistics totaled 1,100 submissions, with more than 250 applicants being granted bail while 142 were denied.
“Seventy had their bail conditions varied, eight had their variation application denied, 10 had their bail revoked and 53 applicants had their application just outright dismissed.”
Mr. Gomez held that when stacked side by side, the Christie led government has outperformed the previous administration in all areas, most importantly the administration of justice.
