There is still no indication as to what may have caused the death of 22-month-old
Anwar Miller nearly a month after the toddler was found unresponsive on a bed in an
apartment complex on Family Street, off Soldier Road, but police said investigations
are ongoing.
Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander gave an update on the toxicology report of
Jermaine Miller and his 22-month-old son who died following a bizarre night at one
of the apartment complexes of Miller.
The Commissioner however, revealed that Miller who was a taxi-cab driver and died
as a result of cardiac arrhythmia, had marijuana in his system.
According to reports, police were notified by a tenant that his landlord (Miller)
attempted to kill him and a female tenant.
It was further reported that as officers entered the apartment, the Miller locked himself
into a bedroom and jumped from a window in an attempt to evade police.
After he was arrested officers conducted a search of the apartment and discovered the
toddler unresponsive on a bed.
Miller while in custody also became unresponsive and subsequently died on the scene.
The toddler was transported to hospital via EMS where he was pronounced dead.
“Yes, nothing showed up with respect to the infant”, Commissioner Fernander said
during a press conference earlier this week.
“The adult male, we found that it was a high concentration of marijuana in his
system.”
Police also gave an update on a police sergeant who was involved in a viral video
where the officer was seen roughing up a schoolboy in the Marathon Road area.
He has pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against him when he appeared before the
Police Disciplinary Tribunal.
Two weeks ago, the sergeant was removed from the front-line duty.
Commissioner Fernander told reporters that following deliberations from the Tribunal
the officer was reprimanded.
“And he pleaded guilty, and I guess he explained himself to the Tribunal and I believe
that he was reprimanded severely, and I think he paid some fines and all of that, so he
was dealt with.
“I think he was removed from front line duties, and I believe that’s where we [are] at,
at this time. But I know he appeared before the Tribunal, and he [pleaded] with
respect to the charges that were put before him,” Commissioner Fernander said.
