Roots For Change Supports Kai Jones

BY DESTINY JOHNSON

Bahamian center Bahamian Basketball player Kai Jones, who made it to the National
Basketball Association (NBA) back in 2021, will be away from his team the Charlotte
Hornets indefinitely for ‘personal reasons’ according to NBA analyst Shams
Charania; there is no timetable for his return.
It comes on the heels of Jones posting multiple bizarre videos and written posts on
various social media platforms over the past few weeks sweating and behaving
erratically. This has caught the attention of the public and questions mount regarding
Jones’ mental health.
Young Jones was drafted 2021, as the 19th overall by the New York Knicks and was
immediately traded to the Charlotte Hornets.
Founder of Roots of Change Non-Profit Organization Melissa Allen-Maynard
released a statement on Monday in support of Jones, as he was a mentor in their
Mirror Mirror Mentorship Programe.
The statement read: “Kai has devoted a significant part of himself and has shown an
unwavering commitment to the growth and advancement of our young men.
“On contacting Mr. Jones to serve as a mentor a year ago, undoubtedly, he understood
the assignment and leaped into action without hesitation.”
The statement added “while we are aware of the various concerning posts made by
Mr. Jones, we would like to take this opportunity to stand by him as he navigates the
road ahead.
“We are mindful and hope that the Bahamian people will, too, be mindful of Mr. Jones
during this period and offer support to him. Now is not the time for speculation or
jeers,” the statement concluded.
Mrs. Allen-Maynard asserted Roots of Change remains committed to the psychosocial
and emotional development of boys and men in our nation and the board of directors
of the organization stand with Kai and offer encouragement to him.
