Prime Minister Perry Christie proclaimed January Majority Rule month yesterday.
The move came after the Bains Town and Grants Town Advancement Association made that request.
January 10 will mark the anniversary of Majority Rule in The Bahamas.
In a press statement released by the association, officials said the event is viewed by many Bahamians as one the most significant events in the nation’s history – perhaps only second to Emancipation Day.
“As Bains and Grants Town over-the-hill was the epicentre of the struggle for majority rule and that many if not most of the major players were products of Bains Town and Grants Town Majority Rule Day is embraced as a legacy of Bains Town and Grants Town,” Association President Reverend C.B Moss said.
“On this the 10th year of our celebrations, the Bahamas Christian Council was invited to organise and conduct the thanksgiving service. Their acceptance has elevated the traditional service which will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church beginning at 7:30 p.m.”
Additionally, the College of The Bahamas was invited to organise a majority rule exhibition to further inform residents of the facts surrounding Majority Rule.
The exhibition will be staged January 10-31 at the Harry C. Moore Library at COB.
It will be opened Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Officials are calling on all residents and visitors alike to celebrate this historic event and thank God for the unity and fellowship that exists among Bahamians.
