The newly appointed principal of the Bertram A Newton Primary School
in North Andros was captured in a video this past week where it is being
alleged that she refused to leave her car and enter the school compound.
Staff members are alleging that the principal assigned to carry out the
administrative duties at the school does not wish to be there and
preferred to remain at her previously assigned school Clara E. Evans in
the settlement of Nicholl’s Town.
In a video circulating on social media the principal is seen sitting in her
vehicle outside the school while a member of staff accosts her about her
decision to remain in the vehicle. Staff members expressed that she was
expected on campus from Monday 26 th August, but had not yet left her
office at her previously assigned school.
One member of staff who prefers to remain anonymous said “she
reported to work on Tuesday, she came in her office and was rude to the
janitors”. The employee went on to explain that she then returned to her
car and refused to enter the campus again. Additionally, the staff
member said “if she wanted to be here, we would work with her, we
work with everyone. This is the first in history Red Bay citizens stood
up for their school, but if she doesn’t want to be here, how can you force
someone.”
Consequently, a meeting was held yesterday with the District
Superintendent and education officials to decide the way forward.
However, staff members report she hasn’t showed up today(Wednesday)
at all and they are currently on hold. Parents, Teachers, students and
staff are awaiting an update from Ministry officials as to what the next
step will be. During these gatherings some parents reportedly spoke with
the principal who allegedly confirmed her disinterest in working in the
community as the school principal.
The Bahama Journal reached out to education officials at the district
education office regarding the results of the meeting but was unable to
get a response as they have chosen to refrain from commenting as the
situation is being resolved. With the new school term approaching,
residents of the Red Bays community are calling on officials for
answers, results and a willing principal in effort to have a successful
semester.
