Bahamas Strengthening National Security Through Use of Unmanned Systems

By Journal Staff Writer

With the advent of drones and with more countries taking advantage of artificial intelligence the Government of The Bahamas intends to keep pace especially as it relates to national security and fighting guns, drugs and human smuggling operations.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) last week inaugurated the Bahamas Unmanned Systems Academy aboard HMBS Coral Harbour which is a significant component of the Bahamas National Unmanned Systems (BAHNUS) initiative, designed to elevate the nation’s expertise in unmanned technologies and strengthen its security framework.

Commodore Dr. Raymond King emphasized the program’s critical role in bolstering national security and combating crime. He noted that the academy not only enhances the capabilities of the RBDF but also positions The Bahamas as a leader in unmanned systems within the Caribbean region.

This initiative fosters collaboration among various security agencies, creating a unified front against both local and regional security challenges.

The Bahamas Unmanned Systems Academy provides specialized training for personnel in operating advanced aerial and underwater drones.

These skills will be essential for a wide range of applications, including law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and environmental monitoring. The launch of this academy underscores the RBDF’s ongoing commitment to innovation and technological advancement, benefiting both the Bahamas and its regional partners.

In addition to this milestone, Captain Carlon Bethel announced a new partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), reflecting a collaborative effort to combat transnational crime, including drug trafficking and organized crime.

This partnership is particularly significant as it enhances the sharing of resources and intelligence across borders, strengthening the ability of the Bahamas and its regional neighbors to address pressing security challenges collectively.

Moreover, the event showcased the RBDF’s commitment to fostering relationships with regional partners.

Through joint operations and information sharing, these strategic alliances serve as force multipliers, enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts across the Caribbean. By working together, nations aim to develop coordinated responses to emerging maritime threats and transnational crime, ensuring a safer and more secure region.

Commodore Raymond E. King is steadfast in his commitment to fostering enhanced collaboration between the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and local law enforcement agencies, as well as regional partners.

Through joint operations and proactive information sharing, these strategic alliances serve as force multipliers, effectively addressing both existing and potential challenges.
