The two Cuban men being held at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) for bad behavior along with another from the Carmichael Road Detention Centre appeared in court yesterday, satisfying a writ of habeas corpus.
Attorney for the trio, Roger Gomez Jr. told the court he received an affidavit and has sent it to an agency for translation so that his clients can read it.
The men only speak Spanish.
Mr. Gomez added that two of the men – Mauricio Valdez and Randy Rodriguez – carried out their resettlement interview with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees on Wednesday.
An appointment has been scheduled for the third man, Pedro Parrado, for the week of August 12th.
According to the attorney, if the applicants are successful, they would be granted status in the United States.
However, Justice Carolita Bethel pointed out that if the applications are denied, a court hearing will take place on September 9th.
The case has been adjourned at the request of the defense until August 21st at 10:30 a.m.
Until then, Rodriquez and Valdez will remain in prison, and Parrado, at the Detention Centre.
The trio’s court appearance comes just two days after Cuban-Americans ended their demonstration outside the Bahamas Consulate’s office in Miami, Florida. The group was protesting the two Cubans being held at HMP.
Meantime, Cubans at the Detention Centre continue their hunger strike.
