The Free National Movement (FNM) will pay homage to its late chairman Charles Maynard with a full track and field classic.
The former Youth, Sports and Culture minister died last year August while campaigning for the FNM in the run up to the North Abaco by-election.
During a press conference at the old Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, party officials announced that the first annual event is a way of both honouring Maynard as well as keep its commitment to sports in the country.
Edward Maynard said he is humbled that the party would pay tribute to his son in such a way.
“I want you to know that Charlie was really devoted to what he did. He wasn’t doing it for fashion. He was doing it because he felt it. That was his passion,” he said.
“Charlie was a ‘fella’ whom I had to tie a rope around when he was four years old. I had to tie the rope around my waist because he wanted to rush with me at Junkanoo.”
Event Coordinator, Shonnel Ferguson said a few other FNM icons will be honoured.
“We’re looking at people like Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield and Dame Ivy Dumont,” she said.
“There will be the Hubert Ingraham 4×100 metre relay and the ‘Catch the Leader Race.’ Our leader is a very fit person and so they are going to have to come tough to catch him. We also have the ‘Catch the Deputy Leader Race’. Now she’s very fast and if you want to see how fast she is, then you’re going to have to come out and watch.”
The classic will take place on Saturday, August 17th, just three days after the one-year anniversary of Mr. Maynard’s passing.
