The Ministry of Education is set to undergo an array of fixtures to several public schools throughout the country.

Director of Education Lionel Sands said yesterday that during the summer months, the ministry will carry out their usual process of upgrading and fixing schools.

The school atop the list is the North Eleuthera High School that suffered major damages after a fire completely destroyed three of its rooms on March 25th.

“What we’re doing right now is we’re clearing out the areas that were burnt and what the ministry will seek to do over the next several months is to have those areas repaired to the state where the students would be able to go back to them and have the normal classes,” he said.

“Right now, we’re using areas that were not affected by the fire. But that hasn’t stopped us from making repairs to the areas where the fire has damaged the school.”

According to police reports, the fire was the work of an arsonist and resulted in the loss of valuable equipment and computers worth thousands of dollars.

The director said that he expects those repairs to be complete in time for the beginning of the new school year.

While he could not comment on other schools at the moment, Mr. Sands said there is less work to be done to schools than last year.

“One of the good things about the continuous repair plan that we have every summer is that each year, less and less needs to be done because of what was done previously,” he said.

“What we would do is we would look at the areas where we believe needs repairs in the summer months and we would have those repairs done before September.”

Mr. Sands said it is important that schools, not only in New Providence, but the family islands as well are kept up to standards so that there be no excuse for the students not to learn
