A double shooting on Key West Street has left one adult male injured and the other dead with
police having launched an investigation into the capital’s recent shooting.
Authorities were alerted to reports of gunshots in the Englerston community around 8:25 p.m.
on Monday.
Police Press Liaison Officer Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings revealed further details
as it pertains to this latest killing.
“The deceased was along with the second male who pulled in front of this residence in a
dark-colored vehicle. Both men exited the vehicle and opened fire on a male who was
standing on the side of a resident in the yard just behind me. During the exchange or, during
the barrage of gunshots, the deceased was shot by his own accomplice. The accomplice left
the area in an unknown direction. Another male, who was in the yard doing some work, he
was shot through his arm and he has been taken to hospital where he is said to be in stable
condition at this time,” Chief Superintendent Skippings said.
With this being yet another killing in an area that supposedly has saturation patrol in the area,
officer in charge of the Western Division Chief Superintendent Chaswell Hanna spoke to
reporters concerning ongoing initiatives and crime combatant efforts undertaken by police.
“One of our signature programs at the South Central Division is Second Chance program,
which focuses on those young people who find themselves in the police station for some
minor, nonviolent offenses. Rather than giving them a criminal record unnecessarily, we
bring them into the station. We do conflict resolution. Teach them about being a good
Bahamian, being a good citizen. We feel that if we target these issues on the front end, while
they’re young, it will prevent other incidents and so on the prevention or diversion programs
as we call it. You’re gonna see effects in the medium term, but we’re gonna do our part in our
enforcement,” Chief Superintendent Chaswell said.
“We’re gonna continue to do our part on the enforcement side, as well as the prevention or
diversion side if we can get on the front end because enforcement alone is not enough. You
have to get crime prevention and diversion on young people in schools and stuff if you want
it to truly be a success.”
Chief Superintendent Skippings issued a call to join together with Bahamians, particularly
those of the Englerston community, in combating illegal weapons and drugs on the streets.
She pleaded with Bahamians stating, “I want to say to members of the public, family
members, yet again, another shooting, another male. Weapons can be used on your own. It is
time for you to step forward and provide us with the information that we need to remove the
illegal weapons and the drugs that is causing our young people to lose their lives from the
streets. We are actively investigating and we appeal to members of the public who may have
any information that can assist us with this investigation to reach out to the fine men and
women at the Criminal Investigations Department or the men and women at the Grove Police
Station and provide us with the necessary information needed to bring this matter to a close.
At present, the deceased is unknown to us. However, as soon as that information becomes
available, we will update you.”
