Former Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage is fighting for his life after he was hospitalized yesterday.

Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Bradley Roberts confirmed yesterday evening that Dr. Nottage was hospitalized at the Doctor’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit and he is “gravely ill.”

The Bahama Journal is not certain as to what illness the former minister is suffering from.

Prior to the recent general election, Dr. Nottage appeared ill on stage at a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) rally as he mispronounced words and slurred while presenting his speech on RM Bailey Park.

Following his speech, he was seen by doctors and treated for dehydration.

Dr. Nottage, 71, recently ran unsuccessfully against the Free National Movement’s newcomer Travis Robinson for the Bains and Grants Town constituency, which he represented for a number of years.

He was a PLP member of parliament from the early 80s.

He held the PLP Kennedy seat prior to leaving to form the Coalition for Democratic Reform (CDR).

Having lost to the PLP in 2002, he returned as minister of health in 2006 under the Christie administration and ran in Bains and Grants Town in 2007 successfully.

He retained that seat until Travis Robinson unseated him on May 10.

Additionally, he was also the leader of government business in the House of Assembly during the tenure of the former administration.

Dr. Nottage also ran unsuccessfully against former Prime Minister Perry Christie for the leadership of the PLP in 1997 and 2009.

As the former Bains and Grants Town MP wears many hats, he is also a former track and field star who has represented The Bahamas on the world stage.

In addition, he is a gynecologist by profession.
