In less than two weeks, the New Providence Road Improvement Project (NPRIP) will be completed, bringing to an end more than two years of frustration, diversions and closures for motorists in the capital.

Giving a brief progress report in the House of Assembly yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works, Philip Davis said based on the reports he has received, the massive infrastructure project should hit its target completion date.

The project called for the construction of 15.7 miles of roads with both single and dual carriageways.

“As of Tuesday, 15.6 miles of the contract road works, single and dual carriageway and the first layer (of asphalt) has been applied.

“Of that 15.6, 13.35 miles have had the final layers of asphalt applied.”

The project, which has been ongoing for about two years, included massive works to the island’s main thoroughfares, widening road ways, paving others, installing drains and sidewalks.

Main thoroughfares like Blue Hill Road, Baillou Hill Road and Market Street were rerouted, widened and repaved.

Massive road works were also done on Robinson Road, Prince Charles Drive, Wulff Road, John F Kennedy Drive, among others.

New, wider sidewalks were also put in and road markings were made more noticeable.

“Included in the works were water transmissions and distribution systems,” Mr. Davis further explained.

“I am happy to report that those have all been completed, except there are outstanding water works, which is limited to two connections along Village Road and a connection at Marathon and Robinson Roads, which I am advised would be completed by October 31.”
