In response to a recent court ruling that found fashion mogul Peter Nygard guilty
of four counts of sexual assault, Prime Minister Philip Davis commented on
Monday morning and emphasized that justice must prevail in any instance where
there are alleged incidents of assault against women.
“I believe in the rule of law. He went through a trial and he was convicted, right?
Any exploitation of young girls or women is dastardly to me,” Prime Minister
Davis said.
“I have daughters, I have a wife, I have a mother and I understand these issues and
so for me, let justice prevail and let justice be done.”
Davis also refuted claims in the political sphere that implied Nygard’s loyalty was
only towards the Progressive Liberal Party, insisting that it was not the case.
“I don’t understand what you mean by his close relationship with the former PLP
government. That’s just the section that he was close. He was close to both parties.
In fact, his presence in The Bahamas was supported by the FNM, you could speak
to the FNMs about that,” Davis said.
“He became to The Bahamas and he had friends on all sides of the divide as far as
I’m aware. So, to continue to paint a picture that he is friendly with the PLP
government and not friendly with the FNM government, it’s bullocks.”
In addition to the guilty verdict on Sunday, Nygard faces criminal charges in three
other jurisdictions. He stands accused of sexual assault and forcible confinement in
Quebec and Manitoba, with the allegations dating back to the 1990s. He is also
facing charges in the United States.
Nygard is fighting extradition to the U.S. where he faces a lawsuit brought by 57
women – including 18 Canadians – which alleges that he used violence,
intimidation, bribery and company employees to lure victims and avoid
accountability for decades. Nygard has denied all allegations.
