Police are conducting an island-wide search for the gunman who shot an off-duty police officer on Saturday.

Authorities said the off duty officer was visiting a relative in the Woods Alley area off Wulff Road around 10:30 p.m. when a lone gunman approached him and shot him multiple times.

The gunman then fled on foot.

The officer was taken to hospital where he is detained in serious condition.

The Bahama Journal understands that the officer is a witness in a matter currently before the courts.
