Protests by members of the opposition, Free National Movement, against Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources V. Alfred Gray, resulted in a 15 minute suspension of the House of Assembly yesterday.
As Minister Gray attempted to address the Lower Chamber, opposition members continuously blocked him from speaking by slamming their hands on the tables.
Speaker of the House of Assembly Dr. Kendal Major scolded the opposition members cautioning them that their actions were “rude and unparliamentarily.”
“In this house when members use their hands on the desk it’s usually an affirmation or some sort of celebration,” he said.
“Obviously at this point, you have been disruptive and that is disrespectful and it dishonors this house and I am ordering you to cease this behavior.”
After the house resumed yesterday afternoon, Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis made an attempt to give a statement on matters in relation to Minister Gray.
The government, this time, returned the favour to Dr. Minnis by interrupting his speech. This action caused the House of Assembly to be suspended for a second time.
Upon the final call to resume the House of Assembly, the speaker announced that proceedings will continue today.
