Chinese officials recently met with Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) executives, government officials and local businessmen to share ideas on the island’s economic recovery and opportunities to strengthen ties in the areas of tourism, trade and manufacturing.
Hosting a dinner reception in honour of Chinese Ambassador Hu Shan’s visit to the Grand Bahama, GBPA’s Chairman Ian Fair said there are many opportunities for linkages between Grand Bahama and China, that, if explored, can prove mutually beneficial for both countries.
“We look forward to future discussions, as GBPA partners with the Government of The Bahamas to move the island’s tourism, distribution, manufacturing and maritime sectors forward,” he said.
Attendees at the dinner included Minister of Grand Bahama, Dr. Michael Darville; executives of the Hutchison Group, GB Shipyard and PharmaChem, as well as other government officials and island administrators.
“Following His Excellency’s initial visit, GBPA’s Business Development team visited YiWu City in China, to explore the concept of establishing an international trade city on Grand Bahama,” said GBPA President, Ian Rolle.
“This second visit shows promise and that there is interest in what Freeport has to offer. We expect to continue our discussions, and pursue prospects that lie ahead for the island. There are numerous opportunities that can be beneficial not only for Grand Bahama, but the entire country.”
GBPA executives met briefly with the ambassador earlier in the day to discuss a number of projects being considered for the island.
“Projects like Baha Mar in Nassau and Hutchison’s investments in Grand Bahama have introduced The Bahamas as a legitimate jurisdiction for Chinese investment,” said GBPA Vice President, Henry St. George.
“As part of GBPA’s ongoing strategy to promote Grand Bahama to the global business community, we will seek to capitalise on Ambassador Hu’s fantastic trade network. We are extremely grateful for the Ambassador’s offer to assist GBPA, in raising the profile of Grand Bahama in China.”
