Officers on the frontline of the fight against crime yesterday secured much needed equipment.
The Police Staff Association (PSA) handed over 30 point blank bulletproof vests.
“. . . we must [protect] citizens, but first of all we must protect our own. We try to make it as safe as possible and make sure our officers are adequately secured,” PSA Chairman, Darrell Weir said during the handover on Thursday.
Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade accepted the donation.
“Nothing’s more important than the welfare of our people, particularly our people on the frontlines – officers in the Mobile Division, the sharp end of policing daily,” the commissioner said.
“This goes a long way to demonstrating that we truly care and it is consistent with our mandate of care, respect and trust and this is evidenced that this message is getting through.”
Late last year, the police force was given 30 new patrol cars at a cost of just over $750,000.
The vehicles are equipped with the most modern, up-to-date police tools, have crash bars, a locater, a modern radio system, improved lighting and siren.
The cars were split between New Providence and Grand Bahama in a bid to decrease crime and the fear of crime on both islands.
