In keeping with its promise to provide the local market with the best and latest in mobile technology, the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) on Saturday rolled out the new Samsung Galaxy SIII smartphone.

It’s the latest in smartphone technology.

In fact, the new Samsung galaxy SIII is now being compared worldwide to Apple’s all famous iPhone 4s.

CNET Ratings – a top online tech product ratings company – calls it an excellent top end phone that’s neck and neck with the HTC One X.

Pumped with high-performing hardware and creative software features, BTC Vice President of Channels and Marketing Gershan Major said the local market is already responding positively.

“The line outside our store for the first 50 door buster started at about 6:00 a.m. Saturday. We were literally sold out by 10:00 a.m. in terms of the first 50 customers,” said Mr. Major.

“I think what is more exciting though is what happened 48-hours prior to this launch. We had customers who were pre-paid switching over to post paid in order to get the benefit of the S3.”

And as BTC Wireless Product Manager Alphanique Duncombe explained, BTC is for the first time launching a new product at the same time as the rest of the world.

But getting these phones to market is a lot more complicated than customers may think.

“Before we actually bring the phones in, we go through a testing process. Our engineers ensure the devices are working properly on our network. And so if that particular device fails that test, we don’t bring it in to our market,” Ms. Duncombe explained.

“And that is one of the reasons why we encourage our customers to not purchase the devices from the US market, because those devices are made for those carriers. But if you purchase a phone from BTC, we can guarantee that that device has been made for BTC and that it actually works on our network. And so you’re going to get the best quality service.”

And just how do you get loyal customers of the competing smartphone brands like Blackberry and iPhone to even consider making the switch?

BTC Associate Altonique Saunders said the answer is in the device.
“I’d actually put it in their hand and ask them to play with it for a minute. Before I switched to Samsung, I had a Blackberry for the past five years. I’m not going back to Blackberry anytime soon because I don’t think the product is anywhere up to par as the Samsung is,” Mrs. Saunders said.

“You’re getting better camera quality, better internet speed, and faster download and upload speeds. Even from a business perspective, you’re still able to send and receive emails, edit documents, open PDF, Excel and Word files. And then you’re able to come back to fun and get into the entire media aspect.”

BTC is also getting set to launch the new Blackberry Jazz within the coming weeks.

Officials say that particular phone is being made exclusively for the Caribbean market.
